- Some of our Rescue and Rehabilitation efforts

Photos of orphaned Mexican freetail pups it was my pleasure to nurture during summer 1999!

These pups were being fed an infant formula. At this point they are not being handled with gloves because they still have their "milk teeth" and are not able (or likely) to puncture skin.

Hold on to your ears what is this thing????
Whatever it is, this stuff is good!
Hey, where are you going with that thing, I'm still eating!!!!

Soon they graduated to "bat pudding" - a scrumptious mealworm mixture that is quite a treat to make! They have sharp little teeth at this point so gloves are worn when the pups are being handled.

This was pretty good but it took a while....

....to get the idea that it was for eating, not wearing....

Stretching young wings....

In July of 2000 we were called to a location where there were a LOT of babies that had fallen to the floor of a barn and were unable to get back up. These babies were severely dehydrated, infested with mites, and slowly dying of starvation. We recovered as many as we could and performed triage in the parking lot.

The opening on the top right is where the bats enter and exit this building owned by a sympathetic (and organic) farmer.

These are some of the carcasses of babies that had fallen and died.
Researcher, Natasha Neumann and (Bat House) Bob Wisecarver searching for live babies.
Before cleaning and treatment the babies were placed in a heated box.
After a quick cleaning up, the babies were injected with lactated ringers to rehydrate them before we were able to clean them more thoroughly and then feed them.
Once the bats were rehydrated and cleaned they were put on heat until we were able to feed them. They were actually bruised from all the mite bites.
This is not your father's Oldsmobile!!
Also, not what you would normally think of when someone mentions Bat Mobile, but a lot closer to reality!
