I've been removing bats from buildings for over 13 years. I also remove bat guano from walls and attics. We always install bat houses so the bats will have a alternative place to live. All my bat houses have bats. If anyone ever needs help with bats please call. George Norfleet is the owner of Batman Wildlife Damage Control & Chimney Sweep Company. Call 1-800-437-1375

Nice website, I have always been about conservation, but I admit bats have always been one of my favorites. Since getting my own home I have been fixing up the gardens and adding a bat house was a thrill for me. No bats yet, but it has only been 6 months. I am adding a waterfall and hope they will come. Even if they don't, the fact that I tried is worth it and I get so many questions about my bat house, it's still an educational experience for all who ask. Thanks for educating all about these misunderstood beautiful creatures. RA

I need help. Right now. My cat has brought me a baby Pipistrelle bat totally unharmed. It can't fly. I don't know where my cat found him. How do I rear him? He is about 4cm. long and has a wingspan of about 6cm. He finally agreed to let go of me while I e-mailed this after searching for relevant info. on the net....no luck. He is in a basket for now but I fear he may not be old enough to eat by himself although I put a bit of milk and a few bird seeds and some cat food in the basket...there are also some little spiders in there who were there before I put him in....I guess this is all useless otherwise I wouldn't be asking for help, so please advise me what to do! I have hand-reared tiny kittens and also cockatiels and once wild sparrow babies too, but never a baby bat before. can you help? Thanks. Izabela.

We live in the country and have at least 3 species of bats under our eaves and in our outbuildings. I have three bat houses up as well. Coastal Oregon would be mosquito central without the swallows by day and our bats at night. I'd love to know exactly WHICH bats we host. I only know there are little ones in our attic, bigger ones in the bat houses, and we;ve seen a single long-eared one in the barn roof. Any local bat folks can reach me at mschram@webenet.net

A brown bat fell out of the ceiling in an older school building about two months ago. It is an adult, and I have been feeding it when it awakens, about every ten days or so. It is in a cool (I turned off the registers in the room), quite place in our home, housed in an aquarium with a lid. I placed a basket on it's side in the aquarium, and the bat hangs from that. I have been letting the bat eat as much as he wants, but over a 24 hour period, he will eat as many as 150-160 mealworms (the small to med size). Is there a rule of thumb for how much to feed? Unfortunately, I did not weigh him when he was received. This is a small brown bat. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Need Bat advice!! Our home is a 100 year old victorian brick home. We were aware that bats we living in the ceiling areas of our porches. We have a large unheated attic and while we have noticed small amount of droppings, we have never found any bats living in the attic. About a week ago we noticed a small brown bat hanging upside down in our hallway close to the ceiling. I made no attemp to capture the creature as I knew we couldn't put him outside as in was well below freezing and I thought the cold might kill him. I half hoped he would stay in place until spring and I would relocate him to the outside then. My wife and children all found our new guest quite interesting. We kept a light on in that area of the hallway and our friend (the bat) didn't move for 3 days. We were away for the weekend and returned to find the bat still occupying the same spot. Last evening I turned off the lights on the main floor including the light near the bat. Within a hour our friend was airborne. He would circle the rooms, swoop low along the floor, then down the hallway (Quite long) fly in and out of other rooms, circling each one. I watched this for several minutes completely amazed at the agility and grace of this tiny creature. What amazed me most was the total silence of his flight. I didn't want him to fly up the stairs to the second floor where the family were all sleeping (not sure why that mattered ) so I decided to try and captue him. I had a small thin light blanket and waited until he flew close to me a floor level and threw the blanket over him. Next I lifted the blanket and coaxed him into a sprout tube (my wife was not impressed!!) with a closed bottom and a vented top. This morning when everyone came downstairs for breakfast they noticed right away that our friend was gone from his near the ceiling spot in the hallway. The kids were excited to see the little creature in the sprout tube. Now my dilema is what to do. I realize he can't be put outside as he would likely freeze. But with it warm in the house he likely won't be trying to hibernate and I suspect this may not be good. I am willing to feed and water him until spring but I am looking for advice as to what to do next. Thanks ... Harv

I seem to be the unwilling recipient of an unwanted house guest every August. I have since learned from the last bat in the house that he may be the same one coming year after year. Not that I want to see him every year. I had no idea that bats can live up to 30 years until I wanted to really find out why they always pick my house. I wish they would stay out though.....

Seems I've had bats in every house I ever owned, they've all been old brick houses and the colonies are VERY territorial. The sun's just now coming up and 100's are circling in front looking for roosts. It took several years, but I finally was able to exclude a huge colony from the attic, they moved to the shutters on the front of the house. I moved a small barn to my home and modified the design somewhat to provide for roosting spaces, including netting for footholds, yet some still prefer the shutters. They're cute and beneficial and noisy and dirty so I want them nearby but not so near they wake me when they come home. The fine black plastic mesh used to protect fruit trees makes excellent exclusion netting, it is tough and nearly invisible. It also can be used to fill a void or crevice and has worked fairly well behind the shutters. Bats are persistent, however, and now that we're approaching the end of the breeding season, it seems that they are branching out from the barn and have come back to the shutters and are "rooching" their way in around the netting. Thought the technique might be helpful to your visitors, it has worked fairly well assuming you've got someplace else for them to go. One other bat story: In a previous house, I heard some cheeping noises from a 2nd floor fireplace I'd just rebuilt, found a baby, a kinda cute, naked little thing making a big noise. Since it was making such a racket, I figured mom would find it if I took it outside and put it behind a shutter. Went back inside and heard another racket, found another baby IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR IN THE ADJACENT ROOM. Scratching my head, I took it outside with the first. Went back inside and found a THIRD baby at the other end of the house on the first floor! Also took it outside, went back in and found an ADULT flying around the house. I can only surmise she was moving the infants as a cat would kittens to protect them from ME! Anybody else ever hear of such a thing? Sun's up, no bats still circling, gotta go!

Hello, What a joy to find all this information on one site. I have copied the plans for a bat house. My grandson and I plan to build a couple. I understand it is difficult to get the bats to move in, so wish us luck. I love bats and find it tragic that they are still persecuted by some people. I have taught my grandson about the wonders of this little animal and he has responded with enthusiasm and love. Thank you for being there. AS

Congratulations on a fantastic and informative website. I am a big fan of flying foxes and bats and enjoy their chorus every night as they eat from the mulberry trees next to my house. I am concerned though at the number of bats that are electrocuted in New South Wales Australia and am trying to gather as much information as i can to fix our electrical wires and the distance between them, or getting them put under ground to avoid this cruel form of death for bats and the starvation of the orphaned young left behind. I work at a Zoo and each year around this time we get orphaned animals in through things like electrocution, road kill and cat attacks........all as a result of some form of human impact. Thanks again for a great site to find out more about bats around the world and i look forward to returning to your site for more updated information in the future. Hello, From South Florida! First of all, THANK YOU for a most enjoyable and informative website!!! My husband & I have been in our house for 15 years, and for the first time, bats have taken up residence in our chimney!! We are animal lovers (2 dogs, 7 indoor cats, 3 birds, an iguana, and fish...outside we have 9 bird & squirrel feeders, plenty of water areas and even a butterfly garden). About a month ago, we heard this strange noise coming from the chimney. It was like a "squeaky kissing" sound......we thought it was birds.....then we went outside & saw them flying in & out -- BATS! Like I said we love animals and certainly appreciate them eating up insects!!! The flue of the chimney is closed, so they can't get into the house. **BUT** if we are in the family room, we can hear them, like they are sitting next to us, on the COUCH!!! I now know it's maternity season & do not wish to harm them, in any way. But in the summer, we get our chimney cleaned (I guess I'll wait until Sept, now?). Thanks, Tina, Bob, & the Zoo (bats, too!)

Hi, found your great site through Jim Buzbees bat links at www.batbox.org (my site is on there too) I live in the UK and my roofspace is home to around 550 45khz pipistrelles, we turned our whole house into a giant bat-box with a choice of north, south, east or west facing roosts (all connecting to each other through crawl spaces in the roof) to give the bats an option to move according to their temperature requirements throughout the year. I frequently find myself sorting out downed bats, usually youngsters in the summer, washing soot of those that fall down the chimney, feeding mealworms or a solution of sugar dissolved in water (to rehydrate and provide energy - they love it!) or passing injured bats to the experts at my local bat group, Durham Bats (http://fly.to/durhambats) If you visit my website feel free to use any of my photos (all by either myself or my father so not copyrighted!) I have some quite good close ups of the tiny pipistrelles sat on my hands. Take care and keep up the good work, let me know if you'd like any more information on my bats or other english bats for your education schemes, and if anyone from the crew ever visits the UK feel free to drop by and see our (now locally famous) "bat house"! It was very educational compare to other sites. We wish you would have a little more on how to build bat houses. But over all great job, and we thank you. Larry

Your site is informative, well-organized and fun! I am a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in the process of obtaining a permit to work with rabies-vector species. Bats have always fascinated me, and I hope to be rehabbing them soon!

What a neat place to visit. Lots to learn here. I will spread the word in hopes that EVERYONE (well almost) will better understand these little creatures.
